O’Shucks in Bradenton
O’Shucks has the Old Florida feel to me when you walk in the door, actually before that. It starts in the parking lot with the brightly colored building and it’s fishy theme. You are almost at Bradenton Beach when you get here, the restaurant is on the left hand side just before the bridge as you are on Cortez Rd. Enjoy a seat at the bar or at one of the tables.
The day we were here the owner/chef actually waited on us and it was very enjoyable. My friend started off with a beer and I opted for a diet drink. He brought it over quickly and then started discussing the menu with us. They were out of oysters and smoked mullet he told us right away. That was fine with us because I had already spotted grouper on the way in the door on the menu board. I’ve become a huge grouper fan since moving here. They had a po boy with buffalo grouper cheeks on the menu and my friend opted for that. The owner explained it came with a horseradish remoulade sauce and I promptly opted out of that. Instead I did a plain grouper po boy with fresh tomatoes. Both entrees were served with 2 sides and we both opted for the fresh cucumber salad, my friend had cole slaw and I had the hand cut house made fries which were outstanding.
As you can see these were generous serving sizes. Chatting with the chef was fun here also. You could tell he really enjoyed what he did and loved sharing all about the food he served. He also checked with us several times to make sure we really enjoyed our food. We also had a chat about how he prepares the smoked mullet the restaurant serves. For sure I am going to go back and try that.
This is the way the restaurant serves the po boy as described on the menu. If you look closely you can see the buffalo coating on the grouper bites. We both thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant and both agreed we would come back again when we get down that way. If you are just looking for a decent place that serves fresh fish and great sides O’Shucks might just be what you are looking for. The lunch we had for 2 with a beer was around $25.00 not including tip.
